ICT provides us with another learning tool to support raising basic skills such as literacy.
Technology is increasingly being recognised as a tool that significantly impacts and improves literacy skills. Games can inspire new ideas for storytelling. Blogging can provide a new, engaging way to practice writing. Appropriate use of ICT can engage children whose attention is difficult to grab. Technology and literacy needn’t be mutually exclusive.
Our range of 'DigiPacks' provide Continual Professional Development (CPD) for teachers on particular themes, technologies or subjects. They are delivered by our e-learning consultants, all trained teachers from a variety of backgrounds. Between them they can offer expertise in primary teaching, school management, Ofsted inspections and subject experience that cuts across the curriculum. Together with their educational background, they have a passion for technology and the role it can play in enriching the learning experience of our students.
We have two digipacks that explore new, creative ways of using ICT to support raising literacy standards in students:
Communication is a driver for more effective literacy skills. By choosing media that young people are comfortable and familiar with, we can harness its power to benefit our students' education. This digipack explores the use of blogging in the classroom and beyond, whilst educating our children in the responsible use of social media.
Storytelling has long been recognised as a powerful learning tool. Digital storytelling adds another dimension, providing new mediums to engage, excite and educate our students. This can be used across subject areas to deepen and extend learning; for example, telling the story of the nitrogen cycle or creating a comic strip in Spanish. Explore our Digital Storytelling DigiPack for more inspiration.
We selected Civica because they showed a great understanding of what we wanted to achieve here at Sandymoor School. We like their partnership model and Civica’s team of teachers act as an extension of my school team…they are invaluable.

Working with Civica’s e-learning team is of particular value to us. Because they all used to be teachers, they really understand the pressures in the classroom, but they are technological experts too, so we get the best of both worlds.
